SYCAMORE, IL, October 28, 2008 – According to the latest National Electrical Code, all new and existing non-residential fluorescent lighting fixtures must have power disconnects installed to safeguard electricians from shock when replacing ballasts.
In response to this code change (2008 National Electrical Code 410.130 G), IDEAL last year developed the code-compliant PowerPlug disconnect. Easily installed without tools, this push-in device allows electricians to safely disconnect hot and neutral ballast wiring prior to fixture servicing, preventing potential contact with live voltage. To re-power the fixture, the technician simply snaps the two halves of the disconnect back together.
The original IDEAL PowerPlug is a 2-wire disconnect with an electrical rating of 6 Amps/600 Volts. To better serve the varied needs of electricians, IDEAL has launched an expanded, improved line of PowerPlugs. The latest addition is a 3-wire model (3 Amp/120V) for switching and dimming -- two popular applications in commercial lighting. Fitting easily through a 1/2 inch knockout, the 3-wire disconnect is perfect for the required retrofitting of installed fixtures, as well as for OEMs seeking to design code compliance into their lighting fixtures.
IDEAL is also offering new 2- and 3-wire PowerPlugs specifically designed for use with 18AWG solid wires. These two versions are targeted towards the retrofit market.
Like all PowerPlug disconnects, the new models have IDEAL's patented "push-in" locking technology, a benefit that directly reduces manufacturing time, labor costs, and repetitive motion fatigue. It minimizes insertion force for faster, easier terminations without twisting or the use of tools. What's more, the simple male-female construction passes UL1977 finger probe requirements, preventing the installer from touching hot contacts.
