IDEAL Introduces World's First Qualification Tester for Both Copper and Fiber Optic Network Cabling

SYCAMORE, IL, April 2, 2007 – Addressing the needs of datacom installers, electricians, and IT/network administrators, IDEAL today announced its new SIGNALTEK™ -FO, the world's first qualification tester that allows the user to measure performance of both copper and fiber optic cabling systems according to Gigabit Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) standards.

The SIGNALTEK-FO testing platform builds upon the success of the first generation SIGNALTEK qualification tester IDEAL introduced last year. It incorporates a full range of original tester's legacy features, such as Gigabit Ethernet Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT), active LAN diagnostic testing, 32MB internal memory for storing up to 20,000 tests, and printed pass/fail qualification reporting. The new FO model features an interchangeable Small Form-factor Pluggable port with a duplex LC connector for fiber optic qualification. As a result, the user can easily migrate from copper to fiber qualifying, assuring all new and existing links are installed properly and will perform reliably in support of 10/100/1000 Ethernet, VoIP, voice, IP video, and other applications.

"Our original SIGNALTEK has been acclaimed throughout the industry for its exceptional ease-of-use, accuracy and reporting," noted Dan Payerle, Product Manager, IDEAL INDUSTRIES, INC. "The new FO version is closely following this tradition by being engineered to test both fiber and copper, an important step forward as Gigabit Ethernet becomes the standard for backbone and zone fiber optic cabling."

TESTS LARGE & SMALL INSTALLATIONS

Dual wavelength capability enables the SIGNALTEK-FO to switch (space needed here) over from 850nm to 1300nm to allow testing of virtually any LAN or campus fiber installation, while multimode and single mode capability permits qualification of cabling to a distance of 10km (6.2 miles). In addition, the SIGNALTEK-FO is the first such tester to perform both Bit Error Rate Testing and Optical Attenuation loss measurements on fiber optic links. It will measure cable attenuation with a dynamic range of up to 20dB.

Explains Payerle: "SIGNALTEK-FO is equipped to tackle virtually any size copper or fiber cabling run. Electrical contractors will appreciate its performance, as will maintenance and IT departments in schools, hospitals, and local governments who need a versatile, low-cost cable tester with active LAN and reporting capabilities."

STRESS TEST LINKS

In addition to a 'snapshot' performance test, SIGNALTEK-FO can be configured to run for several minutes or even hours at a time to stress test the link for dropped packets. This monitoring mode allows SIGNALTEK-FO™ to be used to isolate intermittent network problems that are difficult to detect. It can also inform technicians what device is at the end of a cable run, such as its own remote handset, a live network device or an open link. The unit's intelligent autotest function then performs the correct test suite based on the links current configuration.

CREATE, VIEW & PRINT REPORTS

Another value-added benefit to the user is SIGNALTEK-FO's reporting. Once testing is complete, SIGNALTEK will generate a customized report documenting cable performance that can be stored on the tester, transferred to a PC, or printed for customers. Unlike the Fluke® CableIQ® or Test-Um® Validator-NT™, the SIGNALTEK-FO does not require the installation of specialized documentation software. Instead, SIGNALTEK-FO uses a standard web browser to view and print. Reports can be directly downloaded to a PC via its USB port, or transferred onto a USB thumb drive for greater portability.

PRICING & AVAILABILITY

The IDEAL SIGNALTEK-FO is now available. A special rebate program allows existing SIGNALTEK owners to purchase the SIGNALTEK-FO and receive $895 in return for their older units. Additionally, customers who purchased SIGNALTEK after February 1, 2007 can have those units upgraded to SIGNALTEK-FO fiber capabilities for $695 without fiber modules or $1,095 with the 850nm module. Included accessories with the SIGNALTEK-FO Multimedia Qualification Tester Kit are: fiber ready near-end and remote-end handset, carrying case, copper cable accessory kit (RJ45, RJ11, Coax), fiber optic accessory kit, 8 AA alkaline batteries, 2 AC power adapters, USB cable, CD-ROM user manual, and training DVD.
