A&L’s customization also includes extruded plastic rod lengths, injection molded handles and optional injection molded parts for more complex shapes.

A&L has also developed a multitude of extrusion profiles to help obtain a high quality product with minimal tooling costs.
Following World War II, Al Wetty formed a screwdriver handle company with his father and brother called S.A. Wetty & Sons. In fact, his father, Stephen, was the first person to apply for a patent for the invention of the ball-bearing universal joint. Proving that an inventor’s spirit ran in the family, Al went on to create a co-extrusion machine that allowed for the production of the two-color rod (otherwise called inlay or striping).
In 1970 the family business was sold to Stanley Works (Stanley Tools) and then in 1976, Al came out of retirement to found A&L Handles, Inc with his son Les. The company became a fully-owned subsidiary of Pratt-Read Corporation in 1999, and then part of the IDEAL INDUSTRIES family when IDEAL acquired Pratt-Read in 2010.
Today, with the guidance and support of the IDEAL family, A&L and its dedicated employees are better positioned for success than they ever have been.
